Mark Ashby: Triumph over Epilepsy

As told by Mark Ashby, diagnosed with epilepsy

In 1981, I was an 18-year-old active duty U.S. Marine when I suffered from several grand mal seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. My Marine Corps career ended abruptly because of the diagnosis and I was medically discharged.

Right after my diagnosis, my life was a tough road. I first began treatment with a medication that had significant side effects, and I felt like I was at the bottom of the bottom. The effects of the medication impacted my lifestyle and I was no longer able to physically train as I had in the Marines. At one point, I stopped taking my medication, deciding I would rather have seizures than deal with the side effects. The fact that I considered seizures the better option was a frightening reality!

As technology and medicine improved over the years, my doctor switched me over to a medication that had fewer side effects. But I still didn’t feel like my old self...

Heather Leiggi Places Sixth in "Best of US " Championship
Heather Leiggi took sixth place in the “Best of the US” National Championship Triathlon at Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven, Florida on October 6th.

Leiggi represented Pennsylvania in the international distance triathlon, which consisted of a 1.5K swim in Lake Eloise, a 40K bike and a 10 K run.  She completed the event in an impressive 2:15:07.  Leiggi qualified to represent the state by winning the Pittsburgh Triathlon in July 2007.  This is Leiggi’s second time at the “Best of the US” National Championship; in 2006 she won the honor of representing Pennsylvania with a win at the Philadelphia Triathlon. 
 
Don Morrison is going to Xterra Hawaii!

Don Morrison won the male age 55-59 division at the 2007 Xterra National Championship race on September 30, 2007.  Morrison traveled to Incline Village in Lake Tahoe, Nevada to compete in the event.

Morison competed with fellow athletes in the 750 meter swim in Lake Tahoe, the 32K mountain bike, and 5K forest trail run.  The race, a qualifier for the Xterra World Championship race to he held in Hawaii on October 28th, drew over 350 participants from 46 states and 8 countries.   Morrison, who qualified at an earlier event, will represent the United States in Hawaii. 

 
Patriot's Day Triathlon a Success
HighRoad Cycles MSC had an impressive showing at the team-sponsored race with eight podium finishes. Ana Leonard was second overall woman despite technical difficulties that derailed her bike split. Cheryl King-Marino was the overall female master and Joanna Chodorowska won 2nd place in the 40-44 age

division. On the men’s side, HRCMC swept the 45-49 division with Ira Meyers, Johnny King-Marino (back after two knee surgeries) and Bill Gerzabek all taking age-group awards. Jim Sherry was 2nd in the male 50-55 division and Nelson Dayton, club member and sponsor, won the male 55-59 age –group award.
