Eagleman 2008

 2008 Eagleman ˝ Ironman Triathlon 70.3

Congratulations to all of the HighRoads Multisport Club members that participated in this year’s Eagleman triathlon.  There were at least 16 club members (that I’m aware of) that competed, and numerous family members and friends that came down to cheer us on.  The weather was HOT (92+ degrees) and humid.  The low winds made for a fast bike ride, but resulted in a brutally punishing run.  The water temperature was in the low 70’s, which made the swim very pleasant.  But all of the participants that I spoke with were in agreement that the swim course seemed “long”, and the currents made swimming straight from buoy to buoy a challenge.  I competed in the AquaVelo, which, for those of us who are “running challenged”, is a nice alternative.
Some from the club experienced personal challenges during the race and were unable to complete the course.  I know how frustrating that can be; after training for so long, it’s disappointing to have issue ruin your race day.
One thing is for sure:  Columbia Triathlon Association really knows how to put on a great race.  The coordinators, announcers, and numerous volunteers throughout the course made this one of the best-run events that I’ve attended.  There were plenty of bottle exchanges and water stops throughout the course.  All volunteers were extremely friendly and supportive.  Despite the hot weather, there were plenty of family and friends cheering on the competitors.
Cambridge, MD is a beautiful, quant town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The bike ride is totally flat, and part of the ride takes you through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.   Eagleman is definitely on my top list of well-run local triathlons.
    Here are the overall results.
