Rhode Island 70.3 Triathlon

Rhode Island 70.3 was held on July 13,   in Providence Rhode Island.  High Road Cycles  Members that participated were  Nancy Smith, Amy O’Neill, Maritza Brint, Mark Rochon.   The logistics of this triathlon were frightening when we read about it, after we signed up, but the worries were not ours, that was for the race directors.  What we had to worry about was getting up at 2:30 AM, get on a shuttle bus that left at 3:30 to go to the swim start/bike transition area., which was 1 hour south of Providence.  We had to rack our bikes and leave our “swim to bike” bags the day before, and leave our “bike to run” bags at the transition area in Providence, two separate places.  This was to be a “clean “ transition race, which meant no towels or gear on the ground.  Everything had to be in your transition bags, much like an Ironman.  When we exited the swim we took our wetsuits and put them in a wetsuit bag that was transported back to the race finish.  A lot to think about but like I said not for us to worry about.
The swim was in the back waters of the ocean at Roger Wheeler state park,  The swim was a little choppy, but not bad.  For Maritza, this was her first ocean swim, and she did wonderful..  We transitioned to our bikes and rode along the coast of Rhode Island for 25 plus miles before turning inland and starting to encounter some hills.  The ride was very pretty, and fast.  We rode into Providence on some less then desirable roads, and into the transition area for the run.  Out on the 13.2 mile run, 1 mile into the run there was a very nasty straight up to heaven hill.  This was a 2 loop run so we had to do this twice.  The finish was at the steps of the capital building in Providence.      Mark Rochon won his age group, and Nancy Smith won her age group by ˝ hour. Amy O’Neill, and Maritza Brint both finished high in the age group also.
